St. Johnsbury, VT— Located only an hour from Virginia Beach, in the Tidewater Section of Virginia, the city of Franklin, VA became one of the few locales in the world to deploy an NG9-1-1 capable call handling system: xT911. Deployed on July 29th, 2008 it allows Franklin’s 9-1-1 center to accommodate existing and next generation calls for help from any device, with minimal changes in the delivery calling network and no changes on the PSAP side.
The city of Franklin’s PSAP has two call taker positions that support a population of over 8300 full time residents making over 46,000 9-1-1 calls to the PSAP a year. It must also accommodate a large influx of visitors with wireless phones who frequent the region famous for its festivals and beautiful scenery. xT911 enables agencies like The city of Franklin to migrate to a Next Generation system smoothly and for a significantly lower cost than proprietary-based systems.
xT911 meets NENA’s i3 standards for Next Generation 9-1-1 call handling and provides the 9-1-1 center with numerous enhancements, including:
- The ability to process native VoIP calls and IP communications directly from the internet;
- A fully scalable solution to as many sites and positions as needed;
- Significant cost savings through deploying a software-based solution on common-off-the-shelf hardware (COTS); and
- A Next Generation call taking solution integrated with the xTrakker map, providing situational awareness for every call (landline, wireless and VoIP).
“For the City of Franklin, VA microDATA has demonstrated that a software-based, NG9-1-1 phone system can be a very shrewd investment. With xT911, we obtained a whole new system for what it cost to maintain our old legacy system each year,” said Mickey Futrell, Communications Manager for the Franklin Police Department. “Enhancing operational functionality while reducing reliance on costly proprietary equipment is a fundamental goal of microDATA. We are happy to help agencies like Franklin make a smooth transition to NG9-1-1,” stated Christine McMullen, VP of Business Development at microDATA.
